Chlamydia Prevalence Monitoring SystemBecause of the asymptomatic and widespread nature of chlamydial infection in the United States, the key to monitoring trends in chlamydia prevalence is the establishment and maintenance of a reliable prevalence monitoring system. Since 1994, the Region III IPP has maintained a regional prevalence monitoring system designed to collect data related to chlamydia screening efforts from all project areas throughout the mid-Atlantic states. In recent years the prevalence monitoring database has been expanded to include the collection of non-IPP funded screening activities, data on screening of male patients, gonorrhea screening data and jail prevalence monitoring data. The Region III IPP prevalence monitoring system is part of the broader national chlamydia prevalence monitoring system. The data collected through this project are forwarded to CDC for further analysis. Data are used by CDC to inform project development and monitor disease trends at the national level. Data are also used to develop CDC's Chlamydia Surveillance Supplement, which is produced once a year. At the regional and project area level, data collected through this project are analyzed in conjunction with morbidity data to monitor disease trends, assess adherence to and efficacy of regional screening criteria, assess STD reinfection rates, target screening resources and aid in program evaluation, development and funding applications.
